was born on May 1, 1924, in Tbilisi. From 1945–1949, he studied acting at Shota Rustaveli Theatrical Institute (now Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University), In 1949, he became a member of the Rustaveli Theatre troupe. From 1956 onward, he worked at Kartuli Filmi (Georgian Film Studio). In 1968, Dodo Abashidze was awarded the main prize at Erevan All-Union Film Festival for best performance in a lead role in Merab Kokochasvili’s film, Didi mtsvane veli (The Big Green Valley). In 1970, he received a prize at the 4 th Minsk Film Festival for Aleksandre’s role in Guguli Mgeladze’s film Sinatle chvens phanjrebshi (Light in Our Windows). In 1975, he received a prize at Teheran International Film Festival for a lead role in Nana Mchedlidze’s film, pirveli mertskhali (First Swallow). In 1984, Dodo Abashidze codirected The Legend of the Surami Fortress with Sergey Parajanov. The film was awarded a prize for best directing at Sitges Film Festival in Spain. He was Honorary (1961) and Peoples’ Artist (1967) of Georgia. Dodo Abashidze died on January 26, 1990 in Tbilisi.
