Niko Pirosmanashvili, a self-taught painter living in Kakheti arrives to the capital and tries his hand at running a shop. He fails to become a good merchant instead he takes up painting and paints almost all diners in the city without knowing anything about the value of his paintings. It takes two western educated Georgian painters to appreciate Nikala’s paintings but it leads to his subsequent estrangement from his fellow colleagues and the rest of the society.
