Bakhva Fulava, a merchant from Poti, falls in love with the poor seamstress, Esma and marries her. Jeremiah Tsarba, notorious idler and drinker also desires Esma. Esma repeatedly rejects his sexual advances. Tsarba kidnaps her but the pursuers save Esma from humiliation. However, Tsarba fatally stabs Esma who is later found by her husband in a forest. After his wife’s death Bakhva’s life changes radically, he starts drinking heavily and thinks only about killing Tsarba. Meanwhile, Jeremiah finds protection at the place of his influential relative in “high society”. Beautiful and cunning Valida seduces a rich old man, general Lebov and makes him to acquit Tsarba. Friends help distressed Bakhva to sneak into Tsarba’s bedroom and stab him to death. Then he turns himself to the police and confesses.
