Berua, the only son of the widowed Darejan, falls in love with Sopo, a daughter of the well off peasant. Meanwhile Sopo’s parents have already chosen Sopo’s would be groom. That’s when the word gets about that the village is plagued. The scared population finds refuge in the woods. Berua and Sopo decide that it is the right time to get married and ask the priest to bless them. The priest demands that the witnesses be present. The pair spends the night in the stack of hay. Sopo’s disappointed parents have nothing to do but bless their daughter. The word about the plague in the village turns out to be just a gossip.
