Josef (Soso) Chkhaidze was born on March 18, 1937 in Tbilisi. He graduated from Georgian Polytechnic Institute in 1960 with a degree in polygraph engineering. In 1964-1969, he studied at Moscow National Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) under Grigol Chukhrai. From 1961 onward, he worked at the State Committee of Georgian Tele-Radio Broadcasting. In 1967, he made a two part documentary “kolkheti”. He was closely cooperating with TV Film Studio of Georgia. He was a recipient of Shota Rustaveli State Prize (1979), Honorary Artist of Georgia (1979) and Albert Schweitzer Prize (1983). In 1981, he won three prizes at 30 th Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival, Filmdukaten, Special Award for The Best Television Film and Catholic Film Award. Soso Chkhaidze died on August 3, 1992.
