was born to a well-known filmmaker Mikheil Kobakhidze and an actor Natela Machavariani on June 6, 1961, in Tbilisi. After graduating from Tbilisi secondary school, he worked for a year at Tbilisi Youth Theatre as a stage worker. Next year he started to study acting at Shota Rustaveli Theatrical Institute. Gega Kobakhidze was sentenced to death for hijacking a plane to escape the Soviet Union on October 3, 1984, in Tbilisi.
