The main character of the film remembers an episode from his childhood: Grandmotherused to tell him about her brother, who was killed in the 1937 purges. As a child he thought that the grandmother could have saved the life of an innocent person, but time passes and the young man realises that if he found himself in a similar situation, he might be helpless.
