A priest whose head is shaved by the bolsheviks sets up a school in a mountain village, teaching the elderly villagers to read and write in their free time. Brigadier Stephen considers education a waste of time, does not give peasants a break, and hinders learning. The villagers do not back away. They yearn for spirituality, the sense that man has not come to earth just to fill his stomach.
