Bata is taken by his father to the city seminary as a servant. After nine years Bata returns to his village and becomes the boatman as he wished in the childhood. Bata lives a long life seeing a lot of things including the abolition of serfdom, the revolution and the changes of time. Bata grows nine children and is married but he still misses his old sweetheart Sidu.
