On 14 November 1944 thousands of people from 220 villages along the Soviet-Turkish border were evicted in the course of one night only. The local Muslims were doomed to exile in the steppes of Central Asia on charges of cooperating with Turkey, the Nazi ally, against the Soviet Union undermining its strength. These ethnic groups are called Turks in the secret documents justifying their exile.
