First World War. Clerics of different religion including orthodox, Catholics, Muslims and Judaists call on the soldiers to defend their homeland. They support imperial intentions of England, France, Russia, Germany and Turkey. However, the war brutality opens the eyes of destitute people. Russian soldier Giorgi, a former worker, was a humble believer before he went to the front. While in the tranches he witnesses total absence of soldiers’ rights and the absurdity of the imperialistic war. The army officers and clerics force innocent people to their deaths. Giorgi loses the trust and respect in the clerics and eventually denounces the religion. So does his wife Natasha, who works as a nurse at the sanitary train.
