Two friends, Dolgat and Ismail work on a timber production and processing site in Karachai mountains. They are going to become relatives soon, as Dolgat is in love with Ismail’s sister. During traditional feast and horse-riding, Ismail accidentally kills his friend’s brother. Strict customs of the highlanders require killing (taking blood of) the murderer. Dolgat tries to protest an obsolete tradition of blood revenge. However, the community members influenced by Musa and other rich locals decide otherwise: two friends should become blood enemies. Although Dolgat and Ismail are well aware of the severity and absurdity of the ancient custom, they cannot oppose it and eventually become the victimes of the custom. As Dolgat is suffering, the community watches him with suspicion and considers him a coward. He is forced to kill Ismail.
