The film tells the story of subversive activities of white army officers and adventurers in Baku and Paris in the 20-ies of the XX century. Princess Shirvinskaia, a former owner of big oil refineries, who has immigrated to France, gets in touch with anti-Soviet groups abroad, among them international scheming opportunists, engineer Douglas Maclean and Ialmar Rumanesku. Douglas Maclean works on development of poisoning gas. It’s soon necessary to test this gas in practice. Shirvinskaia suggests to Maclean to travel with her to the Soviet Union and tp conduct this operation there. She has decided to sell her oil refineries to foreign buyers. Expecting that the Soviet government will be soon overturned the foreigners become interested in the purchase. However, the deal faces obstacles as Shirvinskaia had left documents confirming ownership of her property back in the Soviet Union. The documents are kept in a basement of one of her mansions. So, Shirvinskaia herself, Douglas Maclean and Ialmar Rumanesku travel to Baku as the circus artists. However, their attempt to get the documents fails. The former owner decides to burn the oil refineries. Douglas Maclean actively participates in subversion using his invention for this purpose. Massive fire breaks out at the refineries. The diversionists flee.
