A spa-town Pyatigorsk of the 30-ies. Women and their suitors of the upper class who are on a vacation in the town already know each other well. Pechorin’s arrival in the town draws a lot if interest. The young man is popular in Moscow’s and St.Petersburg’s high societies by his extravagant habits. Accustomed to his own successes arrogant Pechorin seeks new and extraordinary adventures. Dull society makes him bored. He gets acquainted with Princess Mary and makes her almost lose her head. Pechorin succeeds in drawing Mary’s attention away from the young cadet Grushnitsky who has feelings for her. Rumors start spreading about Pechorin and Princess Mary. Eventually Pechorin challenges Grushnitsky to a duel and fatally wounds him. After the duel Pechorin is disqualified and exiled. Before his departure Pechorin goes to the Ligovskoys. Mary’s mother thinks Pechorin fought with Grushnitsky because of Mary and gives her consent to the marriage. However, Pechorin confesses that he never loved Princess Mary.
