Londre lags behind his battalion. He stays overnight at the local priest’s house and gets acquainted with Gabriel, his servant. Gabriel confides to Londre that the priest locked up Gabriel’s lover in the room. Londre helps Gabriel dig a tunnel under Tsira’s room, sets her free and invites the priest at their wedding. The priest, who is dumbfounded by the resemblance between Tsira and Gabriel’s bride, ultimately guesses that he is being deceived. Londre makes fool of the city Mayor as well. The latter goes insane. Content that he made the young couple happy and punished the ignorant, Londre leaves the town.
