After the defeat of the French in the war with the Prussians, Paris is experiencing a food crisis. Starving people ransack warehouses. An uprising begins. The frightened bourgeoisie flees to Versailles and plans to attack rebelious Paris with the help of Prussians. Despite hardship and famine, the working class of Paris selflessly defends the commune. Among the Communards is mason Louis Roux. He is the father of the family, has a young wife and a young son. His family is in terrible deprivation. The wife sells her last shoes to buy bread for the baby. The husband does not have time to take care of his family. He is in the Bastion and along with others is ready to fight the guard of Versailles. Louis's wife cannot endure the hardship and goes to Versailles with the butcher. The son stays with the father. The Versailles attack begins. The guard of Versailles resorts to deceitful behavior, attacking the Communards under the disguise of white flags. The commune is defeated. Louis Roux dies in the Bastion. The defeated communes are taken to the Luxembourg Garden to be punished. A young communard is also captured along with the others. The child has a paternal pipe in his mouth. The Versailles officer aims his revolver at the pipe to entertain himself. A bullet hits the child. The young communard dies.
