The film is based on a novel of the same name by David Kldiashvili.

Bekina Samanishvili, an elderly nobleman and widower, decides to remarry, but his son Platon—who is hardly able to make both ends meet or sustain his large family—is opposed to the marriage: should his father have another child, he would have to share his inheritance with it. Platon finds a twice-widowed childless bride for his father, but in a twist of fate his stepmother gives birth to a son.
