Vasil Safonov, a novice writer and his friend cashier Apolon Kazachkov are gamblers and frequent visitors of the casino. As a result, Kazachkov spends the state funds. He desperately tries to win his money back but loses even last kopeeks. Eventually Kazachkov is arrested for embezzlement of the money while Safonof becomes desperate. Young Soviet people do their best to support depressed Safonov and set him back on the right path.
